Website indexation
Here are a few simple steps that will help you improve your website's visibility on the web. It is possible that your site is already up to date. But in case it is not, the following steps will point search engines in the right direction.
The purpose of the exercise below is to verify that your website is indexed by the major search engines. For each, go to the main search engine website as described below. In the search window, type the following information, based on your website address: "site:YourDomainName.com" (replaceYourDomainName with your domain name, as in "MachalekDesign"). So, for MachalekDesign, you would type: "site:MachalekDesign.com".
Note: Change ".com" to ".ca" for Canadian sites. If you have both ".ca" and ".com", do the search for both. They are treated as two separate websites.
Step 1. Google
Type "site:YourDomainName.com" into the search window at Google.
If you get information about your site, great; go to the next step. If Google has no information about your site, check the spelling in your search box. If all is spelled correctly, go to Google webmaster tools.
If you already have a Google account (i.e. Google Analytics), sign in. If not, create an account. Once in the site, click "Add site" and follow the instructions in the four-step process. To accomplish these steps, you will also need to log into your web server (with your user name and password), where your website is stored. If you don't normally do this, ask your web technician to complete the steps for you.
Step 2. Yahoo
Type "site:YourDomainName.com" into the search window at Yahoo.
If you get information about your site, great; go to the next step. Otherwise, submit your site using the "Submit Your Site" and "Submit a Website or Webpage" links and fill out the "Submit URL" field.
Step 3. MSN & Bing
Type "site:YourDomainName.com" into the search window at MSN & Bing.
If you get information about your site, great; go to the next step. Otherwise, submit your site to MSN & Bing by filling in the information on the page.
Step 4. Ask.com
Type "site:YourDomainName.com" into the search window at Ask.
If you get information about your site, great; you're done. If not, please follow us on this site, we will add this information as another article in this section later (Self Help - XML sitemaps).
